I used "Tartan for Me!" 1986 edition by Philip D. Smith Jr. Ph.D. to assign surnames to clans, septs & district tartans, except for Broom. For Broom I used the Clan Sutherland brochure.

Above, "Clan" means a surname that has or had a recognized chief. This is the way the word is used at the Scottish Games & means that the surname is not a sept of another Clan. Clan is Gaelic for Family. The lowlands also spoke Gaelic (Welsh Gaelic) before the Norman Invasion.
