"MY FEATHERED FRIENDS"

Come on in and sit awhile, rest your feet, have a cold drink, enjoy the fish in the pond. Learn about how to attract our feathered friends to your garden. Relax and enjoy, you deserve it.

HUMMINGBIRDS

Gardners would probably put Hummingbirds near the top of the list of wildlife they would like to attract to their backyards. Not only do the tiny birds complement the beauty of the flowers, they are fascinating to watch.

For many of us, the hard work that goes into creating and maintaining our landscapes and flower gardens pays off when we are able to attract Hummingbirds and observe them.

There are two ways to attract them to your property. Plant flowers, shrubs, and trees that produce nectar over a long period of time.

{1} Without a doubt, the trumpet vine, which drapes the fence in one of the landscapes in the house yard, is their favorite source for both nectar and insects. It produces reddish, rubular flowers that can be reached easily.

{2} Sugar water feeders are a godsend, especially when natural food is in short supply. A single feeder can provide food for dozens of birds. To mix the sugar water feeder, you use 4 parts water and 1 part sugar. When preparing the mix, dissolve the sugar by simply bring it to a boil. Don't let it boil, as it will make the mixture too sweet.

I hope this has helped you and there will be a link at the end of the page that you can go to for more info. Hope you can enjoy watching these tiny feathered friends.

I love this poem by Laina Owens

LITTLE THINGS

It's not the great things in this world that makes a man worthwhile, it's the little thing like a tiny flower or perhaps a baby's smile. A little word, sincerely spoken, can lift our spirits high. Like a tiny bird perched on a limb sends his message to the sky. A little dewdrop on a rose and tiny blades of grass. All sparkle in the sunlight, to cheer us as we pass. The lovely johnny jumpups, the smallest flower that grows. Delight the hearts of youngsters peeping up around their toes. A friendly gesture or a smile means more to me than gold. They help us feel that someone cares when we are growing old. Money cannot buy the things that means so much to me. They are part of God's creations, and all of them are free.

what more can I say, she said it all.

MORE TIPS FOR ATTRACTING BIRDS TO YOUR BACKYARD

Attracting the widest varity of wild birds to your own backyard can be very rewarding if you follow some basic guidlines. There are four elements to offer in your backyard to ensure numerous and frequent visits by wild birds.

FOOD

You should consider placing a wide variety of bird feeders and food around your backyard. Consider different types of feeding stations such as platform feeders, hanging feeders, and suet feeders.

SHELTER AND PLACES TO RAISE YOUNG

Wild birds feel more secure if they have shelter to protect themselves from the elements and predators. Trees and large shrubs are welcome places to raise and protect their young. Consider offering nesting boxes and nesting materials in the Spring.

WATER

Probably one of the single most important elements to include in your backyard bird habital is water. The noiser the better. The sound of moving water is magnetic to most wild birds and will draw them from greater distances for a cool drink or bath.

VARIETY OF FOLIAGE AND HABITAT

The greater varity or diversity that you create in your backyard can attract more species of wild birds. Consider plants and foliage that produce berries, seeds, fruits, nuts, sap, and nectar for year round food, as well as to provide nesting materials.
