August 18, 2004. Photos from before and after Hurricane Charley came through are below. Very fortunately, none of us were injured at all. Charley's winds started to pick up about 10pm Friday and had passed by 1am. The eye went right over us with Joy's house on the south edge of it and Jessy and I on the north edge. We felt the eye pass. Winds were clocked at 97 mph in Daytona. They were probably a little less (85-90) at my house and a little higher (110-120) at Joy's. We got 2 to 4 inches of rain with the storm. Two foot diameter, 80-foot high oak trees were snapped off about 30 feet above the ground like toothpicks. One hit my neighbor's house and smashed a corner of his house. Joy had the windows blown out of both of her cars and the roof blown off of her apartment building. She also has no power. Her and Dave are moving into another apartment Tuesday that has a roof, but without power. Mark and Jessy have a hole in their roof where a falling oak branch went through it. Nicole has no power and her roof leaks. The weather here from Saturday to Tuesday has been 92-94 degrees, 80 to 100% humidity, alternating calm and sunny with pouring down rain showers. We have piled debris from the yards in my neighborhood along the streets and it is a continuous pile 6 to 10 feet wide and 6 feet high on both sides of the street. We have a few more yards to clean up yet. Jessy and Mark bought a generator Monday and I have a rented one, so we have some lights, water and our refrigerators running again. We had electricity restored Tuesday afternoon and cable TV, but our phones are out and will not be back until next week.
August 21, 2004 We have all services back. Nicole got power today. Cleanup and repairs continue. Added a few more graphics of the storm.
