South island tour number four

Christchurch.

Christchurch's close proximity to the Southern Alps to the west means that there is some of the worlds best skiing just a drive away.

The largest city in the South Island is Christchurch, with a population of over 270,000.

The early English settlers came to Christchurch and named many of its streets, rivers, and suburbs after english place names.

The parks and gardens of Christchurch reminds many visitors of England. Christchurch is the third largest city in New Zealand. It has an international airport for travel between other countries. Rail and road tunnels through the port hills connect Christchurch to its port at Lyttleton.  Lyttleton handles exports of wool and frozen meat and receives shipments of machinery and manufactured goods. Christchurch is the biggest city in the South Island and the 3rd biggest city in New Zealand. Christchurch is geographically flat and is surrounded by the Canterbury Plains.
Toward the eastern coastline you will find a hilly area called the Port Hills. These hills house some upper class suburbs and the
views are quite spectacular as you can see the Southern Alps Mountains to the west.
Christchurch is reputed to be the most English looking city outside of England and this claim is justified, when you consider that
many of the old buildings still stand unlike Auckland and Wellington whose older buildings have been demolished in favour of
modern towers of glass and steel.
The River Avon gently winds its way through the Christchurch and out into the suburbs. The river has many Weeping Willows
on its banks and there are also many other trees such as Chestnut and Poplars.
Christchurch is called the Garden City. Many homes have well kept gardens and there are many parks with the Botanical
Gardens being the highlight. All this has led Christchurch to win the International Garden City Award.
Christchurch also has a unique character. The Square in the heart of the city for example is an entertaining place where you will
see many people debating subjects from society to God. It can be very hard to hear anything but voices shouting above others
in a bid to get one's opinion across. I recommend that you buy some lunch on a fine day then sit and watch the free and
unplanned entertainment.
