Compiled by John Michael Cribbs
To date, I’ve researched official records on 25 members of the Cribbs family that served in the Civil War. My primary sources are the Union and Confederate individual soldier Service and Pension record holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration, US War Department, War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records, Frederick Dyer’s, A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, and William Fox’s, Regimental Losses on the American Civil War. Over the long term, I plan to expand research to State records and secondary sources as Regimental Histories.
Of Covington Brannick Cribbs’ 10 sons (English Cribbs Family), six served in the Confederate Army. Two in Georgia units and four in Florida units (Jordan’s pension records indicate he lived in Florida continuously since 25 Dec 1857). Jordan, Owen and Darrell served together in the same Companies within the 1st Special Battalion Florida Infantry and then within the 10th Florida Infantry Regiment. I did most of my research at the National Archives in Washington. I also obtained State pension files for Jordan and Owen. Darrell did not apply of a pension.
I still need to research the other brothers: Archibald Brannick Cribbs served in Co A, Coast Guard Battalion Georgia Militia, Solomon Brannick Cribbs served in the 1st Regt Florida Cavalry, and Covington James Cribbs served in Co G, 64th Georgia Infantry.
Based on my initial efforts, here’s a recap of the Cribbs Family Civil War Service.
